Waiting for the tiger
9
I find myself waiting for Apple’s next major OS X update like a child desperately trying to get to sleep so Christmas morning will arrive quicker. I often get mildly excited by new software, being the geek I am, but waiting for Tiger is affecting me in many ways.
First of all, I find myself holding back from buying apps and programs, which I’d normally splash out on without hesitation, incase they’re rendered obsolete by Tiger’s new features - things like iNexus’s dotMac Menu and the full version of either NetNewsWire or NewsFire.
Secondly, Amazon.com is offering a 35USD rebate for pre-orders - how come Amazon.co.uk isn’t doing something similar? This annoys me.
And there have been so many blogs, news or rumour sites saying “It’s gonna be released tomorrow/yesterday/soon!” that I’m sick of waiting.
Maybe I’m just getting impatient in my old age.
Amazon.co.uk are now offering Tiger for 74.99GBP.

I’m looking forward to it but I’m also dreading it, too.
It’s not all that simple for me because I’ve got to make time for installations & updates.
Plus, with big point updates, I like to wipe my computer and install clean and put everything back the way it was…

I read on your site about you having to put time aside and all that. When you do, try not to think of me taking my time, having a cup of coffee and leisurely exploring all the new features …

I used to be the early adopter.
I was there at the launch even for OS X Beta and running it on my work G3 .. right up until it screwed everything and I lost work.
Not anymore.
Also, with any new release, there’s nearly always some kind of problem that’s in need of a fix.
I remember this with Panther.
There were two pretty serious problems that wiped data; external hard drives using Firewire would get wiped and the FileVault feature doing pretty much the same thing.
I’d be surprised if Tiger didn’t have the same teething problems…

Besides, there’s nothing to stop me installing Tiger on either my G4 Quicksilver or my G3 iBook…

Being a mere home user, I don’t have too much data that I’d miss if it did get wiped - anything I *really* need fits onto a DVD-RW … every Friday morning.
I ‘spose I’m still a bit starry eyed about Apple and the miracles they can pull out of their ass - no doubt I’ll be jaded and cautious one day, but not today.

But Panther is so shexy. What could possibly be improved by it, other than Apple’s stock?

Automator scares me. It’s potential (in bringing the GUI for writing bad code) is something I don’t want to think about.
It’s gone a long way from where it was last summer, but I start to get tired of it. So relaxing at the moment with OS X Server and later maybe FreeBSD…
No one knows when it will be out. Patience. :)

Thanks for commenting, G.
Patience is no longer needed - it’s just been announced that it’s being released on April 29th! Woo!
*ahem*

I’ve order my copy.
It’s going on my iBook and I may get my G4 Quicksilver working and use it as a server.
But it ain’t going on my G5 until I’ve done a super massive back up .. which is just going to take yonks to sort out…
