A friend of mine is getting married on 1st September and, not being one to do things by halves, he decided that instead of a stag night he’d have a stag day. I’m not gonna talk about the whole day, though, just the first event … - Delay start-up items to make them quicker

I don’t know about you, but whenever I start/restart my Mac I hate the way that, when it’s got to the desktop, it tries to launch all the start-up items at the same time and so your hard-drive is whirring like mad, hopping back and forth and splitting its time between each app. - Time to get up … erm … help? It has been just over three months since I took delivery of my all-singing-all-dancing-super-Ninja-shit-kicking bed … and now it’s broken. Bollocks. - It’s over!

Please forgive the attention seeking crypticness of my previous entry - I was in a strange state of mind. Now, though, I’m out the other side and can fully explain myself. - Screen savers

I’ve never really been one for screen savers — when I had a Windows box I just used to set it so the screen would turn off after 5 minutes. That was until I borrowed Tugger’s iMac (one of the originals) and saw Bliss. - A mysterious peak

I had a quick glance at my Mint stats today and I spotted a mysterious peak on my Fresh View “past month” graph. - Easy backups with Automator and smart folders

A while back I did some bitching and moaning about not being able to use Finder’s smart folders for doing backups. A quick recap, minus the whinging: I wanted to be able to label files with colours and have them copied to my iDisk using an Automator workflow. I tried … and failed. So I cobbled together an alternative solution marking files with Spotlight comments instead of colours. It did the job, but not the way I wanted. But now someone has, at last, written the one action for Automator that I’ve been waiting for all along. - Get your morning news with Automator

Being a creature of habit I like to get up in the morning, wash and get dressed, have some coffee, eat my breakfast and then sit myself in front of my iMac with another coffee and catch up on all the news that’s broken since I hoisted myself into bed 11 hours earlier - I check my email, read my news feeds and then check a few websites along with my customers sites to make sure every thing’s ticking over nicely. - Griffin PowerMate

When N told me that she couldn’t think of a suitable present for my birthday, she suggested I buy something myself and she’d give me the money to pay for it, so I ordered a Griffin PowerMate. - Backup files automatically by selecting them in Finder

I’ve been using 1001 a lot recently (after being pointed to it by the lovely MHC) and as a result I’ve been able to view a lot more of the photos uploaded to Flickr than I normally can - it’s easier to browse a column of thumbnails that have already downloaded than to constantly click … wait … click … which is what I end up doing on the actual site. - “I need a reliable person!”

Do you ever go out shopping, to the pub or to the beauty clinic for your fortnightly waxing session and forget to put your Mac to sleep? I know I do, so I thought of a way to do it by sending a text message from my mobile/cell phone - well, technically we’re not going to be sending a text (SMS) message, rather a multimedia (MMS) message. - A new pair of cans

Very soon after getting my iPod it became painfully obvious that, whilst the Apple-supplied earphones sounded good, they were bloody uncomfortable and had a habit of falling out of my ear now and then. I put up with it for a couple of months but in the end it became far too annoying to continue with. - It still hurts

I don’t have much that I need to save in order to make my life worth carrying on with should my hard drive die; currently I back up about two and a half gigabytes of data to a DVD-RW once a week. There are more than a few smallish files that could do with being saved daily so I decided to try and copy them to my iDisk with as little of my interaction as possible - I thought using a smart folder would be the key. - FSH Muscular Dystrophy

I have muscular dystrophy and, if I’m honest, it’s a bitch and I fucking hate it. I still have a decent (albeit twisted) mind and enough friends and family to ensure an active social life, though. So what if I can’t get up those stairs? There’s bound to be someone around who could drag me up by my hair. Using a wheelchair virutally guarantees a good view at any live event and I can park almost any where I want. But, I still hate it. - New words for 2005 Work Place Vocabulary

Surely, after 20 days of trial by fire, the Australians must now realise that God never really intended this enormous tinderbox to be used for human habitation. Plainly it has created as a giant dustbin, a place far from civilisation where all His failed experiments could be left to their own terrifying devices. - Drinker’s Troubleshooting Guide
