I had two hard drives connected to my iMac — an 80Gb internal and a 250Gb external (via FireWire) — and yesterday my internal one died - one minute it was working fine, then it started making a noise and then about 30 seconds later it died. - Easy backups with Automator and smart folders

A while back I did some bitching and moaning about not being able to use Finder’s smart folders for doing backups. A quick recap, minus the whinging: I wanted to be able to label files with colours and have them copied to my iDisk using an Automator workflow. I tried … and failed. I don’t have much that I need to save in order to make my life worth carrying on with should my hard drive die; currently I back up about two and a half gigabytes of data to a DVD-RW once a week. There are more than a few smallish files that could do with being saved daily so I decided to try and copy them to my iDisk with as little of my interaction as possible - I thought using a smart folder would be the key.
